Guatemala

Article Abstract:

Peace has finally found its way in Guatemala with the signing of an accord putting an end to the country's 36-year old civil war. Guatemala has ended a chapter of its history, but an optimistic one will soon unfold that signifies a new beginning for the once-troubled nation. The approval of the Reconciliation Law manifested the desire of the nation to grant forgiveness but within the context of justice. It has been a long struggle for peace, and the end of the civil war enfolds a new struggle towards democracy and development.

All in day's work

Article Abstract:

The UK's new occupational health and safety vocational qualifications, VQs, are important because, unlike a degree course, they are employment-driven. VQs are on the competence to perform the activities in an occupation to the performance standard expected in employment. Although now pre-entry qualifications are needed, candidates will need to gain underpinning knowledge. Candidates must register with the Awarding Body, which will award a VQ certificate once the qualifying number of units have been completed.

High flyers

Article Abstract:

British Airways has implemented a new managerial strategy towards the safety of its employees, which has increased the awareness of safety issues, with the result that more accidents have been reported. The programme included improved methods of collecting data for analysis of safety issues. Though the programme has not yet been in operation for long enough to assess its effectiveness, it is hoped that there will be a reduction in the number of accidents, in time lost and in injuries to employees.
