Hoping for the best, planning for the worst: conflict in Kosovo

Article Abstract:

Lessons learned by Europe and the U.S. about the civil war in Bosnia may need to be applied to Kosovo. Kosovo is a province of Serbia struggling for its independence. Albanians make up most of Kosovo's population, yet fear retribution from the Serbian leadership. Neighboring Albania has recognized its independence, but Kosovo has not received any help toward independence from the international community. The world community should plan ahead to prevent a Bosnia-like conflict there.

Choosing the warpath

Article Abstract:

Serbian security forces in Kosovo aimed to regain control of the western Drenica region from Albanian guerrillas of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). This crisis gave President Slobodan Milosevic an opportunity to regain a favorable political position within Serbia. Furthermore, Albanians' refusal to take part in elections or recognize Serbian institutions have resulted in a large pro-Milosevic delegation in the Kosovo parliament.

Modernising mandate

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the victory of Greece's ruling party, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), in the first election of the 21st century. Prime Minister Kostantinos Simitis aimed in his last government to reform the economy, placing the country on a par with its European Union partners, and to effect a rapprochement with Turkey, the country's perpetual adversary. He must now consolidate these gains.
