House approves military budget leaving major programs intact

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives voted to approve the proposed defense budget for FY 1993. The proposed budget amounted to $270.5 billion and included funding for major programs such as the B-2 bomber and the Strategic Defense Initiative. Although the proposal approved by Congress was 4% less than what the Bush administration asked for, no major weapons systems were cancelled. The budget also included funding for assistance to military personnel who would be adversely affected by the cutbacks in troop levels.

Bush opposition to test ban under increasing pressure

Article Abstract:

The Bush administration's opposition to any limits on nuclear weapons testing has been coming under increasing international and domestic pressure. Pronouncements by Russia, Canada and Kazakhstan calling for a comprehensive ban on nuclear testing have put the pressure on the US to reciprocate. In addition, legislators in both houses of Congress have proposed bills outlining such a ban.
