Indonesia: how long Suharto?

Article Abstract:

Indonesian President Suharto's 'New Order' regime has brought the country considerable economic success, but the country's political system has not changed in more than 25 years. Power is monopolized by a small group of advisers around Suharto. On June 9, 1992 the Golkar party was again returned to power with 2/3s of the vote. The Islamic Development Unity Party and the Democratic Party increased their share of the vote, but not as much as some had predicted. Suharto, president since 1966, has now served longer than any Asian ruler except North Korea's Kim Il Sung.

The globalization of private security

Article Abstract:

Globalization of private security companies (PSCs) have a profound impact on the day-to-day provision and politics of security altering the landscape of security both locally and globally, leading to and reflecting an increasing commodification and politicization of security. The increasing fragmentation and multiplication of security providers, in the privatization and globalization of security, mean that private actors must be seen as an intrinsic part of the security field.

Not over yet

Article Abstract:

The resignation of Indonesian President Suharto on May 21, 1998, symbolized the critical role of the military in the country's politics. General Wiranto, the Defense Minister, promised to support the successor President Habibie and protect Suharto. Habibie promised to serve the reminder of Suharto's term and maintain his regime. However, the absence of troops during much of the rioting of May 12 to 15 demonstrated a vote of no confidence in President Suharto by the military.
