Institutional accountability in higher education: a strategic approach

Article Abstract:

The notion of accountability in higher education needs to be balanced with the need of educational institutions to remain independent of the sway in public opinion. Higher education needs its lofty ideals, the so-called 'ivory tower' to remain true to its goals of providing education, whether such education has an immediate economic impact or not. The original premise of education for providing a venue for independent thought has produced more for economic growth than an educational system that caters to the need of public opinion.

Program-level contribution analysis: a tool for guiding management at a university

Article Abstract:

One of the best management tools for educators and school managers is program-level contribution analysis, which estimates the resources allocated by the school to a particular course and balances it with the resources needed to support such courses. An application of the technique in a university showed that the university's offering of numerous graduate courses is diluting its support resources while unable to provide the resources which will alleviate the pressure on other revenue-generating courses.

Meeting the performance funding challenge: a nine-state comparative analysis

Article Abstract:

A nine-state survey on the viability of performance funding in higher education showed mixed results, but generally pointed to the viability of the system. Some of the exceptions to the trend in the survey stem from the reluctance of implementors to fully undergo performance funding in implementing many of their social policies. Many educational institutions that offer 2-year courses are better suited to implementing such performance funding measures than those offering 4-year courses.
