Japan is twenty years behind

Article Abstract:

Japan has realized the many defects of its social and economic structures and the need to institute reforms to keep up with other countries competing in the international arena. In an era when liberalization and deregulation characterize global economic trends, Japan is restricted by its bureaucratic administration in its bid for a place in the global marketplace. Another difficulty lies with global economy's borderless nature. To make up for the 20 years of delay, it should achieve a speed and scale of reform.

The market is social

Article Abstract:

The European social model may have to be sacrificed if the European economy does not become efficient and globally competitive. To achieve this goal, many European countries are adopting liberalization, deregulation and privatization schemes to speed up economic development. The welfare state and public services need not be sacrificed. When adequate jobs have been created and the European economy has managed to effect structural reform then the social model can be maintained.
