Leading the leaderless

Article Abstract:

The presidencies of the European Union and the group of eight leading economies (G8) have presented a major opportunity to build on the foreign policy reputation. The German presidencies have not suffered from a gap between expectations and achievement, as they try to consult heavily with other partners, traditionally with France and only to reveal the presidency plans at a relatively late stage.

Costly delusion

Article Abstract:

An analysis of how Australian security analysts managed to miss the growth of militant Islam in Indonesia ahead of the bombing in Bali. It is argued that defining Indonesia as part of Australasia led to the Australians making serious policy errors that can only now be corrected by forging closer relations with other Asian countries that share similar concerns and beliefs.

On June 9th 2003, North Korea declared that it had no option but to develop a nuclear deterrent paralyzing China's foreign policy and unnerving Washington. The challenges the Chinese national interest face and its threat to Beijing are discussed.
