Life with the enemy: the one-state solution

Article Abstract:

The Palestinian state that exists within the confines of Israel will not be a viable entity until Israeli settlers withdraw from the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The policies of Benjamin Netanyahu's Israeli government make this extremely unlikely. The best alternative for the entire region, although almost equally improbable, would be the establishment of a single, secular democratic state congruent with the boundaries of Palestine before its partition in 1947. In this state, both Israelis and Palestinians would be accorded the same rights and freedoms, and would share a single, fully integrated society.

Murder in Zion

Article Abstract:

The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin in Israel has led to a national re-examination of policies and priorities, creating a much-needed catharsis. Mainstream right-wing parliamentary politicians laid down the arguments that formed the philosophical foundation for Rabin's murder, which has at least temporarily cast their claims and ideals in doubt. Such a trauma frequently strengthens democracies and draws more moderate voices into the political fray. Accusations that the govt is illegitimate may be muted for years.

Blood on the path to peace: how 'Mr. Peace' became "Mr. Security.' (roles of Shimon Peres and Israel in Middle East peace process)

Article Abstract:

Former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres may have made some progress toward peace in the Middle East but changed direction before his electoral defeat. Peres had first been known as "Mr. Peace," but later became "Mr. Security," perhaps in an effort to curry more Israeli favor. This strategy backfired, and he lost the May 1996 election to Binyamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu may have learned some lessons from Peres and may be making strides toward peace with the Palestinians.
