Logics of participation: rural environmental governance under neo-liberalism in Australia

Article Abstract:

The Australian Landcare movement is an example of a move toward participatory environmental governance which has been promoted by federal and state governments. Neo-liberal reforms can be legitimated and supported by participatory rhetoric and bounded democratization. These schemes tend to be localized and linked to the production goals of local communities and farmers, and such a local approach does not tackle the wider issues that are important in rural Australia. Some local groups have realized this need for wider involvement.

Article Abstract:

The investigation of entangled operational logics of two global justice networks that is People's Global Action Asia and the European arm of the International Federation of Chemical, Energy and Mining Workers are presented, as they combat tendencies towards emerging operational hierarchies. The work of key activists, or imagineers, in their role as 'grassrooting vectors' is assessed as the possibilities for the construction of mutual solidarities between social movements.
