Morality and monopoly: the constitutional political economy of religious rules

Article Abstract:

The link between market structure and social welfare, perceived as the 'output' of organized religion, is extraordinary, because contrary to expectations, net social welfare may actually improve as a result of monopoly in the market for organized religion. 'Profit'-maximizing, competitive religious firms will enhance the quality of the moral rules they sell to individual consumers by lowering the effectiveness of those rules as behavioral restrictions, and as a result produce negative externalities for society.

Foreign profits and the political economy of quotas

Article Abstract:

Quotas are used by governments, instead of high tariffs, to increase profits on international trade because tariffs tend to reduce profit margins. They also serve as political tools because they may be allotted to groups with significant influence. Thus, quotas serve both political and economic purposes by increasing the local demand for a product. Discriminatory quotas, on the other hand, inhibit free international trade.
