New and old collide

Article Abstract:

An examination of the problems that face new and old members of the European Union in the run up to the planned signing by 10 states on 16 April 2003 of the Treaty of Accession, a key stage on their path to full membership of the European Union. Each of the 10 new states will need to ratify its membership of the Union through its own procedures - which in some cases could include the holding of referendums - and issues of institutional reform within the Union and differences between pro-European and pro-American countries still need to be ironed out.

Age concern

Article Abstract:

Rival institutions, evolving geopolitics, hostility form nongovernmental organizations and absence of a precisely defined mission have marred the fifth decade of The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) which celebrates its 45th anniversary at the end of September 2005. The organization's Secretary General Angel Gurria and other key persons are contemplating to transform the OECD into a G8 secretariat to offer direction to the organization, which is currently struggling to justify its place in the world.
