North-South financial tensions: desertification after UNGASS

Article Abstract:

Desertification is a primary environmental concern which is hoped to be addressed during the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Desertification was first brought to the attention of international communities in the 1997 UN Conference on Desertification in Nairobi, Kenya. However, the derived solution, the Plan of Action to Combat Desertification (PACD), was never realized due to lack of political commitment and available resources. The contents of the PACD is hope to be re-negotiated at the UNCED.

Let the sun shine in North Korea

Article Abstract:

New South Korean pres Kim Dae Jung is convinced about the need to institute an economic restructuring policy in South Korea for its industries to remain globally competitive. He also believes that North Korea's hostile attitude towards South Korea is a sign of weakness that should not be allowed to grow. Thus, Kim Dae Jung is prepared to adopt a 'Sunshine Policy' towards North Korea by assuring the North that the South has no intentions of absorbing it and wants only the maintenance of peace in the region.
