Old boundaries for a new state: The creation of Iraq's eastern question

Article Abstract:

The delimitation of Iraq's boundaries with Iran and Kuwait, which occurred prior to the Great War and before Iraq's statehood, caused many of the strategic problems that Iraq has faced with its two neighbors. When shaping these territorial limits, Britain might not have realized that it was creating the explosive issue of Iraqi access to the Persian Gulf and it appears that Britain left to the Iraqi state an eastern question of its own.

Iraq and the problem of border security

Article Abstract:

The first step in formulating a solution to the existing problems encountered on Iraqi's borders is the understanding of the history of those borders. Although the understanding of these borders increased and declined, the effectiveness of the Iraqi forces controlling some areas along these borders is improving and the success of these efforts play an important role in the ultimate outcome of the security situation in Iraq.

Contingent sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the sanctity of borders

Article Abstract:

The emergent challenges to the sanctity of international borders are observed by providing a discussion of international law on the issues of uti possidetis and territorial integrity. The challenges are examined to these ideas that have emerged in the past few years through the notion of contingent sovereignty and its relation to earlier calls for humanitarian intervention and current discussions around the United Nations.
