Pentagon reports higher proposed weapons deals

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon reports proposed arms sales of over $12.1 billion in 1998, with 17 countries requesting weapons and services from the Pentagon's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Missiles, rockets or torpedoes accounting from around $4 billion of the potential deals, and other request included amphibious assault vehicles, Apache attack helicopters, Chinook helicopters and Paladin artillery battalions. 22 warships valued at $1.6 billion were requested.

United States remains on top of UN Conventional Arms Register

Article Abstract:

The UN Register of Conventional Arms conducts a yearly survey of countries' military holdings and exports of conventional weapons such as battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, large caliber artillery, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile launchers. For the 1996 declarations, the US is top exporter as they produced 2,342 pieces of equipment. Turkmenistan and Netherlands come second and third, respectively.

U.S. buys Moldovan aircraft to prevent acquisition by Iran

Article Abstract:

The US government purchased 21 MiG-29 fighter aircrafts from Moldova, along with all spare parts and diagnostic equipment found in its airbase. This is a move to prevent Iran from buying these Russian-made fighter planes that have the capacity to transport weapons of mass destruction. From this transaction, Moldova is to receive from the US cash payment, humanitarian assistance and non-lethal excess defense articles.
