Point: rethinking affirmative action

Article Abstract:

Affirmative action (AA) is contrary to federal law and American tradition. Yet most government, academic, and business pundits consider it a good employment practice. However, cases have shown that its negative effect outweighs its positive ones. For one, it obscures or even nullifies the real qualifications of the person, who is then perceived as merely benefitting from the AA program. Thus, it damages self-esteem since it implies that its recipient does not merit the position. Such had been the case of Thomas Clarence, Lani Guinier and Colin Powell.

Looking like America: the continuing importance of affirmative action in federal employment

Article Abstract:

Affirmative action has improved the status of minorities and women in the federal workforce from the time that Pres. Richard Nixon issued Executive Order 11478. By the late 1990s, data show that the workplace has become more egalitarian and, thus, some claim that AA programs are no longer needed. However, the same data would also show that the minorities and women face other barriers, such as opportunities for promotion, and disparities in in the application of disciplinary action.

Counterpoint: by thine own voice, shalt thou be known

Article Abstract:

The purpose of the affirmative action (AA) was to correct the basic tendency in the workplace assumptions. These assumptions conflate economic privilege, gender, race and lifestyle that preclude women, non-whites and those in the lower ranks of the society. Although AA action guideline has been in place since the 1970s, it has not been applied as it should have been. The AA creates a workforce made up of Americans from all walks of life who are qualified for the job.
