Private lives and public work: professional careers in state civil service

Article Abstract:

The changing character of the workforce underscores the need for employee policies that would better address the needs of today's professionals. An analysis of Wisconsin's civil service employees show that traditional concepts of gender roles in the workplace have changed radically. Personal concerns, part-time jobs and women's assumption of the breadwinner role have influenced the course of both men's and women's careers. Organizations should try to formulate more flexible policies that will enable employees to realize their potentials yet allow them to attend to their personal lives.
