Privatism and partnership in urban regeneration

Article Abstract:

The Uk government launched a new approach to inner city regeneration in the period immediately following the 1987 General Election. The approach applied enterprise culture as a new urban redevelopment strategy. The plan involved the development of self-reliance among inner city dwellers, elimination of welfare dependency and remoralization of residents. The strategy hued closely to the concept of privatism wherein public subsidy was used to draw private investment into the inner cities. However, the viability of this strategy remains to be proven since investment must be present within the inner cities to lure more investments.
