Reaching for justice

Article Abstract:

The International Criminal Court (ICC) and many other groups aim to try senior leaders for the most serious international crimes, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity and in punishing the guilty they provide independent affirmation of victim's suffering. The courts complement the existing domestic courts and the national trials demonstrate that the rule of law is operating in post-conflicting countries, and reduce the international courts' caseload.

Escape from justice?

Article Abstract:

The United Nations-backed special Cambodian court set up to bring to justice top leaders of the Khmer Rouge for genocide committed during their rule between 1975 and 1979 is hampered by various procedural obstacles. A failure of these efforts would adversely affect the victims of the mass crimes and their families, Cambodia's international standing and judicial reform efforts and also the growing system of international criminal justice.
