Real world

Article Abstract:

Real World, a coalition of 32 non-governmental organizations (NGOs)in UK, was formed with the general aim of influencing the content of the next general election campaign in the country. Specifically, its objective is to ensure that the political parties and the media address the issues of environmental sustainability, Third World poverty and social injustice in the country. The organization is a potent force in NGO politics in the country. However, its potential significance in the nationwide political sphere is highly doubted.

The new lobbying: interest groups, governments, and the WTO in Seattle

Article Abstract:

The author discusses the disruption of the 1999 World Trade Organization ministrial in Seattle, Washington. The author asserts that the rounds failed due to conflicts of interest among the negotiators, despite media coverage emphasizing the role of anti-gloabalization protesters in derailing the summit; the author provides a framework for the Seattle negotiations, an overview of the political economy of protection, the role of the WTO in promoting trade liberalization, and highlights misperceptions of the WTO.

Human rights NGOs: the power of persuasion

The role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in advancing human rights since World War II is discussed. Topics include the role of NGOs in defining and promoting human rights norms, combatting abuses, the role of the US, UN implementing institutions, the search for accountability, and the scope of NGO activities, including the NGO role in gaining support for the land-mines treaty.
