Reflections on the Trade Policy Review Mechanism in the World Trade Organization

Article Abstract:

The problems encountered by the World Trade Organization in the operation of its Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM) and recommendations on how to improve the mechanisms of the TPRM with the objective of developing more transparent trade policies are discussed. The areas examined are the goals of the TPRM, data on its operations and suggestions to improve its operations. To stabilize the TPRM, it is recommended that it should generate initiate information that will be important to the development of rule after correlating the trade practices of different WTO members.

The first WTO appellate review: United States - standards for reformulated and conventional gasoline

Article Abstract:

The World Trade Organization plays a major role in the settlement of trade disputes through the Disputes Settlement Body (DSB). The first Panel Report handled by the DSB was the 'United States - Standards for reformulated and conventional gasoline.' DSB's decision, which was released on Apr. 29, 1996, may provide an overview into the future of dispute settlement procedures in the WTO.
