Russians voted for democracy, not capitalism

Article Abstract:

Exit polls in the July 3, 1996 Russian election show that 60% of those who chose Yeltsin voted not for him but for the democratic system for which he stands. About 8% of those who voted Communist did so in protest and because they felt the system was already safely in place, while the rest felt that the new communist leaders would still allow elections in the future. However, data strongly show that, for the Russian polity, democracy does not equate capitalism since only 10% approved of privatization. Over 50% wanted the government to run major industries and over 1/3 preferred worker ownership.

Anatoly Lukyanov, Russian Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov's senior adviser, says that history will allow Communism to rise in Russia again. He claims that Russia can only be great by ending the Great Criminal Revolution which has made the nation into a raw-materials colony of the West.
