School the day after tomorrow

Article Abstract:

The importance of old hierarchical institutions such as schools is under threat of being devalued with the emergence of networks of continuous communication. New technologies thus need to be adapted to the tasks of education to transform the educational process. Steps toward this direction have been taken, beginning with the knowledge that can be gained from the media and the advent of distance education. The next stage is the ability to self-assess knowledge and deficiencies using videos and CD-ROMs and the final phase will be self-education, when people can teach themselves. However, to avoid the pitfalls of this development, self-education must be made a tool for progress and responsibility.

Will the Asian flu infect globalization?

Article Abstract:

Analyses of the Asian economic crisis's effect on globalization are presented. Although Asian countries such as South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong are comparatively small, their impact on the international arena is substantial since markets are linked. It may also have far-reaching effects on democracy. It is projected that although the region may recover from the crisis, its growth will be remarkably slow. Consequently, Asia's trade deficit with the US will also be negatively affected.
