Sweeping victory, uncertain mandate

Article Abstract:

The international community is worried about what the ascendancy of the Islamic Resistance Movement of Palestine, better known as the Hums, which has won the 25 January 2006 Palestinian Authority parliamentary elections, could mean for both the domestic affairs of the Palestinian people and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. It is widely believed that a Hamas-led Palestinian Authority (PA) aligned to an Iranian-Syrian axis could lead to either the collapse of the PA or the end of the Palestinian peace experiment.

Sierra Leone: a vote for better governance

Article Abstract:

The implications of the peaceful elections held in Sierra Leone in 2007 and the restoration of democracy after the end of a protracted civil war are discussed. The ouster of the ruling party that brought an end to the civil war indicates the people's desire for better governance and improved social welfare activities by the next government.
