Take me out to the ole' ballgame ... a strike-out for Blacks?

Article Abstract:

Jackson's coalition picketed the opening game of the Baltimore Orioles to highlight the poor hiring record for non-whites and women in the baseball industry. About 31% of the team players are African or Hispanic. But the numbers in other areas are low. The office of Major League Baseball cites a 15% raise in so-called minority employees up to 17% since 1987. However this includes only one referee but many secretaries and receptionists. There are no African or Hispanic team owners, presidents, chief scouts, general mangers or directors of player personnel. Jackson vows to demonstrate at every major-league stadium this 1993 summer to keep the public aware of the issue.

Blacks in Congress: helping us or just helping themselves

Article Abstract:

The 26 blacks in the House of Representatives of the US Congress are reviewed as to their accomplishments. Despite involvement in the House Bank scandal wherein five black congressmen were accused of abusing their banking privileges, most were given a vote of confidence and will likely be reelected in 1992. The nine newly formed black-majority districts will add nine black members to the House. However, this leaves black representatives still a minority and the results of the election will largely determine their power to move the Congressional agenda.
