Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the likelihood of that the outcome of Taiwan's Mar 2000 presidential election will have a strong impact on regional security and on Taiwan's relations with mainland China. Taiwan has become more important in the world's economy and more dependent on trade with mainland China.

Strait choice

Issues are discussed regarding the possible return of Taiwan to mainland China now that the same has happened to Hongkong and Macao. In addition to diminishing Taiwan's democracy, this would let China enjoy Taiwan's strategic location and control its technological prowess.
