Testing times

Article Abstract:

India successfully completed two series of nuclear tests in May 1998. These tests have increased tensions between India and Pakistan. Furthermore, Pakistan is under tremendous internal pressure to carry out its own tests. Pakistan is also under external pressure not to follow India's steps. However, the real threat may come from China, an established nuclear power in that region.

A business in demand

Article Abstract:

NATO's role is changing from its 40-year strategy as a defense against Soviet aggression. It must now act as a peace-keeping force and an aid to forming alliances. The political situation NATO will face in the 21st century is more complex than during the 2-sided Cold War. To survive, the organization will have to provide different services to its members.

New relationships for old

Article Abstract:

Britain's relationships with America might be thinning out and new ones are in the building process. The need for the Europeans, especially the British to think through what new ones they should seek, and exercise their sovereign choices are discussed.
