The Balkans: still Europe's powder-keg

Article Abstract:

The Balkans continue to experience political crises as citizens assert their power and challenge government authority and post-communist policies in 1996 and early 1997. Serbia's Slobodan Milosevic was confronted with huge public protests and forced to acknowledge his opposition's election victories. Public demonstrations in Albania led to the promise of early elections aimed at ousting its center-right governing body. Bulgaria's month-long demonstrations against the Socialist government's economic policies also led to early elections.
