The East Asian prospect: a tale of three systems

Article Abstract:

The three political systems currently in operation in Asia are the Leninist, authoritarian-pluralist and democratic. The future of the democratic form is facing challenges in the form of corruption, the tenuous relationship between freedom and responsibility, the growing risks of political leadership and the failure of democratic states to inculcate political values. However, postmodern democracy is likely to survive because it promotes greater political openness and peaceful conflict resolution, greater human creativity and greater social diversity.

Why Asia needs democracy

Article Abstract:

Asia's need for democracy has been derived from its need for economic progress, although its nature is not always materialistic. Pro-democracy lobbyists in China regarded democracy as a deterrent to corruption and a vehicle for modernization. Democracy, however, is not bound to any culture but incorporates individual rights to influence participation in the government. Hong Kong and Singapore's models of democracy show conflicting conceptions of this ideology.
