The TVA dream: David Lilienthal in Latin America

Article Abstract:

David Lilienthal, American exponent of international development, exemplified his country's predilection for big projects and its characteristic optimism in dealing with world affairs. Lilienthal, a founder of the famous Tennessee Valley Authority, spread his American brand of development to Latin America. Although initially successful, Lilienthal's efforts began to unravel with the onset of later developments such as the Iranian war whose unfortunate effects on his own international company could never have been foreseen. His ultimate failing was attributed to the failure to recognize unique cultural and sociopoliticeconomic realities of foreign locales.
