The debate on national identity and the Martin Walser speech: how does Germany reckon with its past?

Article Abstract:

The public confrontation between author Martin Walser and the Germany-based, Central Council of Jews Pres Ignatz Bubis sparked a furious debate among intellectuals and the German public. Walser questioned the concept of public remembrance of the Holocaust and the Third Reich in his speech. His challenge must be evaluated within a considerably larger context of the birth of what is sometimes called the 'Berlin republic' and the search for a shared national identity after German unification.

Taiwan's identity challenge

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's geo-strategic position, defined by its oppositional relationship to China and its cross-strait relations have remained a global flash point for nearly sixty years even though its goals have shifted from reunification and signification to democratization. The changes make it hard for Taiwan to maintain a tolerable relationship with China and not trigger any conflict while the international community has to learn to deal with Taiwan's new autonomous identity.

The euro, the common currency adopted by twelve European Union members is one of Europe's historic efforts to build unity, cooperation and stability while maintaining the sovereignty, history and pride of each individual country.
