The elections of 1997

Article Abstract:

The Institutional Revolutionary Party suffered a resounding defeat in the July 1997 Mexican general elections, marking the end of its seventy year long leadership. Newly-appointed regent of the Federal District Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, representing the Party of the Democratic Revolution, easily won his seat after competing with Institutional Revolutionary Party representative Alfredo del Mazo and National Action Party representative Carlos Peraza. Mexican voters' are keen to live in a democratic society.

The shape of the future

Article Abstract:

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) suffered a resounding defeat at the Jul 6, 1997 general elections in Mexico. The absence of any presidential reelections since the mid-1920s resulted in a government riddled with corruption. The introduction of democratic procedures in 1988 and 1989, brought about by pressure from the Party of the Democratic Revolution, eventually led to the PRI's downfall in 1997.

Fox's Mexico at midterm

Article Abstract:

Mexico's 2003 congressional elections confirmed both the country's transition to fully competitive politics and the persistence of structural deficiencies associated with its multiparty presidential system. In wake of midterm elections, what the future holds for Mexican democracy is discussed.
