The end of civil conflict in Colombia: the military, paramilitaries, and a new role for the United States

Article Abstract:

Colombia's electoral democracy is not capable of handling the violence that characterizes several of the nation's regions. Several challenges are anticipated to hinder the realization of a successful peace agreement designed to end the civil conflict in the country. Even though the US has the influence and resources to promote a permanent solution to Colombia's problem, it has only increased its capacity to perform counternarcotics operations that is, arguably, further deteriorating the country.

Iraq's youth in a time of war

Article Abstract:

The damaging influence of the war in Iraq on Iraqi youth, and the difficulties faced by them, are explored and suggestions to improve their position and help them secure their future are mentioned. It is suggested that the United States and international community, instead of their spending billions of dollars on war, should provide better support to the youth and make them a part of the their country's stat-building efforts, which is very important for stability of the country and the region.

More borders, less conflict? Partition as a solution to ethnic civil wars

Article Abstract:

The conventional wisdom among scholars and policymakers opposes solving ethnic conflicts by drawing new borders to create new states, however, such a view is flawed. Partition is the only route to long-term stability and the United States needs to recognize this and prepare for the coming partition of Iraq rather than pursuing the futile attempts of implementing power-sharing among Iraq's Shi'ites, Kurds, and Sunnis.
