The opening of Russia: an assessment of the impact on East-West trade

Article Abstract:

Changes in trade policy in Russia and the global community, coupled with a normalization of East-West relations, has resulted in an increase in international trade involving Russia. It is estimated that trade policy decisions in Russia resulted in as much as 55% of all imports to that country in 1993, and 40% of the exports. Normalized relations have had a predictable effect, with as much as 60% of the potential trade between Russia and the non-European West that would be expected under non-Cold War conditions being realized in 1993.

Article Abstract:

Having created a reputation for quality, Japanese companies are now receiving materials from and contracting assembly work in developing countries because of their lower wage rates. Another aspect of Japanese success comes from their sales of small amounts of technology for high prices to competitive neighbors.
