The opposing selves of Lionel Trilling

Article Abstract:

Lionel Trilling's reputation can be attributed to his position as an eminent professor at Columbia and an important member of the anti-Stalinist group. The rise of some of his students as successful poets also contributed to his prominence. He is rated as one of the most influential American cultural critic of the twentieth century. He also had the privilege of becoming the first recognized Jew in the English department of the country's premier university. The shock of his demise, in November 1975, was felt in America and other parts of the world.

Joseph Conrad's 'The Secret Agent' as a moral tale

Article Abstract:

The work of an artist can include a moral element, and this is true of the best novels of Joseph Conrad. Conrad responds to moral and social issues without preaching or seeking to produce propaganda, in his work 'The Secret Agent.' Conrad shows his concern about human souls and 'The Secret Agent' illustrates the impact of a world where the soul has been discarded. Conrad shows his moral imagination when he addresses our soul, condition, and conscience.
