The paradox of civil society

Article Abstract:

The paradox of civil society arguments lies in devaluing the role of political associations such as political parties and social movements in fostering civil community and democracy. Robert D. Putnam's version of an apolitical civil society and its positive impact on democratic governance misses on the same point. Political mediation to resolve conflicts among the groups in civil society and the primacy of the political settlements that is the basis of a polity are ignored. Also, civil society as being independent of the state to resist tyrannies can be used to undermine democracies.

Assessing welfare state change: the German social insurance state between reciprocity and solidarity

Article Abstract:

An analytic framework to study the welfare state change builds upon the distinction of two fundamentally opposed logics of social exchange, namely the logic of reciprocity and of solidarity is described. With any of the developed welfare states of the OECD world, this approach can be replicated.
