The quality characteristics of Japanese soybean imports

Article Abstract:

Japanese soybean markets appear to operate efficiently and as expected but do not statistically reflect any impact from US grades and standards on soybean quality and appearance. The standards (grades 1-4 and Sample Grade) may give the market no useful information, or they may have created a uniform standard of quality met by all exporters. Soybean buyers do select for specific characteristics relevant to their particular markets. Soybeans bought for crushing have lower oil content and more split or damaged beans.

The employment and welfare effects of quantitative restrictions on steel imports into the United States, 1955-1987

Article Abstract:

The US has had tried to protect jobs in the domestic steel industry for the majority of the last 22 years through voluntary restraint agreements (VRAs). While up to 12,000 jobs per year have been preserved, the cost to consumers of such protection has been approximately $2.2 billion annually while saving only $11 million. An argument against additional VRAs has been that they also decrease jobs in other markets.
