Through a glass darkly

Article Abstract:

The Asian economic crisis will take a larger toll on the global economy than previously anticipated. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) reports the world economy must grow a minimum of 3% if unemployment in industrialized countries and poverty in developing nations is to be controlled. The globalization of finance has resulted in an unstable world economy, requiring an international governing body to enact regulation and reform.

Risking a Great Depression

Article Abstract:

An increasing risk of global depression is indicated by financial instability and panic in a variety of countries. Economic destabilization occurs when countries with weak banking systems have large capital flows, or when financial panic spreads to industrial nations. The International Monetary Fund is needed to oversee worldwide economic policies so that the economic isolation of industrial nations does not exacerbate the problem.
