Toward stability or crisis?

Article Abstract:

The stability or otherwise of Russia's political system depends on the merging of old and new interests to suit current demands of democratic transition, privatization and globalization. Despite the emergence of opposition movements, democratic elections, a market economy and a free press, many facets of the old Soviet regime still exist which may be conducive to long term stability. However, a downsizing of the official machinery and reduced interference in the private sector, which relies on public subsidies, will impart stability to the chaotic post-Communist regime.

Self-coups: Peru, Guatemala, and Russia

Article Abstract:

The recourse to self-coups, or 'autogolpe' as it is called in Spanish, by the executive branch in a democracy to push its agenda in the face of obstructive legislative and judiciary branches may have its temporary merits but are definitely self-defeating in terms of democratization. Its abuse has given rise to authoritarian regimes. In the case of Peru, Guatemala and Russia, this mechanism has not produced permanent damage although it has compromised the ideals of democracy which include open debate among constituents.

The two sides of the new Russia

Article Abstract:

The changes in Russia following the downfall of communism do not fit in the 'classical' model of democratic changes. The transitions are complex and contradictory. Several challenges face the country today as there is no agreement among the leaders about the policy to be followed in the post-communist era. Moreover, there is a lack of a strong state apparatus. Market-based economic reforms are unable to make their way and there are internal conflicts. In its advance towards democracy, Russia must solve these problems.
