Hans Blix has been appointed Executive Chmn of the new United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspections Commission (UNMOVIC). This decision ends conflict over the previous nominee, Rolf Ekeus. The first task facing Blix will be develop an organizational strategy for UNMOVIC, which will replace the United Nations Special Commission in Iraq. The key challenge will be to detail the work plan and the main disarmament tasks for Iraq to tackle before United Nations sanctions can be lifted.
