UN Security Council sets terms for 'closing' nuclear file on Iraq

Article Abstract:

International economic sanctions against Iraq will soon be lifted following its cooperation with UN weapons inspections. The UN Security Council has removed a never implemented travel ban on Iraqi officials on May 7, 1998 and outlined the conditions for ending investigations into Iraq's nuclear weapons program. The future of the investigations has remained uncertain since Apr 1998 when the International Atomic Energy Agency reported no indications of prohibited activities in Iraq to the Council.

U.S. investigating computer exports to Russian nuclear weapons labs

Article Abstract:

The US Commerce and Justice Departments are looking into the unlicensed sale of five US-made supercomputers worth $650,000 by Silicon Graphics, Inc. for gauging the reliability and safety of Russian nuclear armaments without doing the actual testing. Silicon Graphics, however, stressed that it complied with all the rules on export of such equipment. Viktor Mikhailov, head of Russia's Ministry of Atomic Energy, made the acquisition public during a press conference held on Jan 13, 1997.

IAEA begins monitoring conversion of HEU from US nuclear stockpile

Article Abstract:

The International Atomic Energy Agency has started to oversee the reduction of US-owned weapon-usable uranium. The highly enriched uranium conversion programme is taking place at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The resulting low enriched uranium material will be usable in nuclear power processing for energy rather than weapons manufacture.
