U.S., Russian intelligence agencies offer proliferation assessments

Article Abstract:

CIA Dir James Woolsey stressed the possibility that North Korea has already produced enough fissil materials to manufacture at least one nuclear weapon. Woolsey stated that the agency had evidence that North Korea was hiding its weapons-related activities because these activities violated its commitments to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The report concluded that North Korea may not possess nuclear weapons at this time, but it was actively involved in developing one.

The proliferation of ballistic missiles

Article Abstract:

Over 20 Third World countries currently have short- or medium-range surface-to-surface missiles. Iraq's use of its Scud missile arsenal during the Gulf War demonstrated the danger posed by the proliferation of such weapons. Some of these nations have begun to develop such missiles on their own. At present, efforts to stem the proliferation of ballistic missiles are concentrated in the Missile Technology Control Regime.
