Youth gangs in Latin America

Article Abstract:

The myths about the sudden appearance and growth of the youth gangs in Latin America, which has led to an unmatched growth in the violence and crime since 1990, are investigated. The analysis demonstrates that the number of crime associated with the youth gangs is smaller than commonly claimed and the structural forces such as inequality and social exclusion are the main causes behind the increase in the youth activities in Latin America since 1990.
