A panel of 20 highly variable microsatellite polymorphisms in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta) selected for pedigree or population genetic analysis

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on 20 new microsatellite loci that are highly polymorphic in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) to identify markers that are polymorphic in rhesus macaques, and selected specific loci that show substantial levels of heterozygosity and robust, reliable amplification. These new rhesus markers have an average of 15.5 alleles per locus and average heterozygosity of 0.83, and the panel of DNA polymorphisms would be useful for a variety of different genetic analyses, pedigree testing, paternity analysis and population genetic studies.

Tetanus antibody titers and duration of immunity to clinical tetanus infections in free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)

Article Abstract:

Tetanus was first described in the rhesus monkeys (Macaca multta) of Cayo Santiago, and a sample collected in 2004 of the original cohort of monkeys immunized in 1985 and 1986 showed that 14 out of 15 (93.3%) had protective tetanus antibody tilters at the ages of 20-23 years. Two intramuscular doses of tetanus toxoid provided long-term, if not life-long, protection against tetanus for rhesus monkeys, living in a tropical climate where tetanus was enzootic and the risk of infection was great.

Milk composition varies in relation to the presence and abundance of Balantidium coli in the mother in captive Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta)

Article Abstract:

The article discusses a study on the composition of milk produced by rhesus macaques during their lactation period. It was found that mother macaques without the lower intestinal parasite Balantidium coli had a high fat concentration in the milk compared to those with the parasite.
