A prospective study of the influence of eating-disordered mothers on their children

Article Abstract:

A prospective study from birth to five years of age of the children of eating disordered (ED) and non-eating disordered (NED) mothers indicates that ED mothers and their children, especially their daughters, interact differently from NED mothers and their children in relation to feeding, weight concerns and food uses. The daughters of ED mothers seem to have a greater avidity for feeding early in their development than comparison groups. There is also evidence that ED mothers behave differently towards their children from NED mothers with regard to a number of food and eating interactions during early childhood.

The relationship between sexual abuse and eating pathology

Article Abstract:

Patients with histories of childhood sexual abuse show higher degrees of the pathological eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, as compared to nonabused patients. Scores on the Eating Disorder Inventory show that abused individuals have high levels of Interpersonal Distrust, Interoceptive Awareness, Drive for Thinness, and Perfectionism. The scores of these individuals, who have no eating disorder, are comparable to those of patients with eating disorders. Abuse-specific characteristics have no effect on the degree of pathology.
