Annotation: the impact of puberty

Article Abstract:

Major increases in sex hormones and changes in physical appearance mark the phase of pubertal maturation, which affects psychological adjustment. Hormonal changes may begin well before the physical changes, which are characterized by intra- and interindividual differences rather than by uniformity. Biological changes, social aspects, and individual characteristics interact to bring about changes during puberty. Future research must examine the heterogeneity of pubertal effects. The developmental task model offers an approach focused on the person in social context.

Is puberty a critical period for socialization?

Article Abstract:

The onset of puberty brings about several physical and behavioural changes in adolescents. The unpredictable and fluctuating moods of these individuals also affects their socialization patterns. There may be problems of withdrawal or over-socialization in adolescents depending on cultural and social background. In girls the problems related to maturation is more acute. Teenage pregnancies can be seen as an effort to assert their individuality as adults in society.
