Antecedents and consequences of boys' depression and aggression: family and school linkages

Article Abstract:

Increase in marital conflict between parents, positively correlates with depression in boys. Depressed boys are likely to be dominated by their peers. Boys' negative interactions with their mothers predict aggressiveness in them. Peers dislike boys who are depressed or aggressive, which further aggravates the aggressiveness. Thus, peers' dislike mediates the association between boys' earlier and subsequent aggression. However, the state of being depressed tends to lighten the negative effects of being disliked.
