Are numerical impairments syndrome specific? Evidence form Williams Syndrome and Down's syndrome

Article Abstract:

Williams syndrome and Down's syndrome, genetic disorders that differs in their relative abilities in verbal versus spatial skill are chosen to examine the hypothesis that exact number abilities rely on language-relevant processes whereas approximate number of calls on visuo-spatial skills. Differences in the infant and adult number phenotypes between these two genetic disorders are discussed with reference to the processing styles used by each group and impact on their developmental trajectories.

The development of automaticity in assessing number magnitude

Article Abstract:

An investigation of developmental changes in automatic and intentional processing of Arabic numerals using a numerical-Stroop paradigm is presented. It seems that, for younger children, the access to the magnitude representation is by no means automatic, as it was not initiated under unintentional condition.

The development of arithmetical abilities

Arithmetical skills are essential to the effective exercise of citizenship in a numerate society. The way in which these skills are acquired, or fail to be acquired, is of great importance not only to individual children but also to the organization of formal education and its role in society.
