Assessment and treatment of sleep disorders in children and adolescents

Article Abstract:

Assessment and treatment of sleep disorders in children and adolescents requires an interdisciplinary approach of combining general paediatrics, child psychiatry, child neurology and developmental psychology. Assessment methods include adequate history recording, maintenance of a sleep diary and physiological sleep recordings. The treatment approaches include medication, and behavioral and cognitive approaches. Diagnostic and treatment approaches for sleeplessness, parasomnia, and excessive sleepiness are described. The psychological implications of sleep disorders are discussed.

Behavioural treatment for sleep problems in children with severe learning disabilities and challenging daytime behaviour: effect on daytime behaviour

Article Abstract:

Research has been carried out on whether treating sleep problems of children with serious learning difficulties can improve daytime behavior. The children being treated did not show behavioral changes compared with the control group, but both groups showed some improvement, according to teachers and mothers. This improvement may have been a result of taking part in the study, which may have improved sleep duration. The factors which are linked to the improvement could be identified so that they could be used as therapy.

Practitioner review: Recognition of pseudoseizures in children and adolescents

Article Abstract:

Pseudoseizures are a problematical clinical issue with serious implications, especially in older children and adolescents. Many traditional criteria do not discriminate well between pseudoseizures and other episodic disorders such as those involving dramatic behavioural manifestations. More reliable diagnostic criteria include selective clinical criteria and some findings from EEG monitoring.
