Assessment of substance abuse in psychotherapy clients: the effectiveness of the MMPI-2 substance abuse scales

Article Abstract:

Three scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) have been developed to detect individuals who abuse alcohol and other drugs. These scales are the revised MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC-R), the Addiction Acknowledgement Scale (AAS) and the Addiction Potential Scale (APS). A study of 68 psychotherapy clients who were substance abusing, compared with 392 nonabusing clients showed that the substance abusers had higher average scores for all three scales, with the AAS scale as the best predictor on its own. The AAS scale measures acknowledged abuse rather than traits linked to abuse. Respondents in some other settings may tend to be less open with pathological responses.
