Persistent osteopenia after recovery from anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure the hip and lumbar spine bone densities in 18 women who have recovered from anorexia nervosa. Results show that 14 of the 18 women have osteopenia. Results also indicate that reduced bone density can be best predicted using the duration of amenorrhea. Additional research on the use of oral contraceptives among women recovering from anorexia nervosa is advised.
